There are unquantifiable iPad apps for classroom use. I've written about many that I use in previous blog posts. None of them have dealt with one of the biggest issues hindering teacher success, classroom management. You know, that part of preparing for a new school year that often gets thrown by the wayside as we focus our attention on lesson planning. Fortunately, these apps will make managing your classroom, well . . . a lot more managable.

I did it again, starting out with my absolute favorite app. Well, Book Retriever is worth jeopordizing my literary credability. What does it do? It does away with the need to maintain a paper trail for your classroom library (how many books have you lost with that system anyway?).

By using the built in ISBN barcode scanner you can add all of your classroom books to your classroom library catalouge. Students may then check books out or in by scanning any book from your classroom with your iPad. Book Retriever also features Hot Book lists based on which of your books have been checked out the most. And it also provides book information including grade level, Lexile, AR and ATOS information.

Gamification is a trending topic in educational circles. Class Dojo turns classroom management into a game . . . for the students, at least. It turns managing behavior and keeping an anecdotal record a hassle-free joy for teachers.

By setting up your classroom account and assigning your students their own avatar you can provide immediate feedback for specific student behaviors by the click of a button (iPads actually don't have buttons. Darnit).

Class Dojo also features the ability to print behavior reports for students, parents, or administrators see as well. Don't even dare think that Class Dojo only tracks negative behaviors. That would be counterproductive. Use this stellar app to show how students are becoming self-directed learners in your well-managed classroom.

Teacher Pal has a reputation that precedes it. Featured by Apple as one of the best apps for Teachers in Classroom Tasks, this app allows you to track attendance, grades, behavior, and design your own seating charts (that last feature is my favorite).

Teacher Pal is a one stop app to manage all features in your busy classroom. It also has the versatility to create different classrooms for all of your classes or periods. With the ability to take notes on lessons, assignments, and behavior Teacher Pal is a great tool to utilize to help organize your anecdotal records, student information, and grades. Download it. You won't regret it.

So you DO use Book Retriever? How has it made checking out books easier? Do you have to have one iPad up by your books the whole day? Please explain more. Thanks!

Joy, I do not leave my iPad by the classroom books. I have students bring their books to me to check out or in. That way, I have a record of where my books are at at all times on the iPad that I use. Within the app, each of my students has a library account. When they check a book out, I scan the ISBN and select their name. The app shows that they have that book until they come to scan it as having been returned. It is fast, effective, and stress-free. I no longer have to worry about where my books are at.

I used Class Dojo last year for my kindergarteners and it was the best. Boy oh boy my kiddos loved when I would turn on the "x-ray" machine and Dojo would start to ding throughout the day. Parents loved the printouts too! It's absolutely fabulous.

Tried out an app similar to Book Retriever today. It allows you to scan to check out the books, but no scan option is available for checking in books. You simply select the book from a list. Does Book Retriever have the option for scanning in and out? Thinking about using it for a class set of math textbooks. I am not sure if I am going to have all 150 students check out textbooks this year with so much of our curriculum online.

Class Dojo: experimented with it about a month ago. Didn't think it would be feasible for a 6th grade setting where I see students for only 45 minute periods. Is that how you use it? Or are you in a setting where you have the same students all day?

Yes. Book Retriever does have a scan out and scan in feature. I hadn't thought about using it for textbooks though. It also allows you to create your own ISBN (for textbooks perhaps).

I teach 6th grade in an elementary setting, so my students are with me most of the day. I do swap classes with the other 6th grade teacher for social studies and science. Still, I do see my kiddos for more than 45 minutes. I really like the anecdotal record that Class Dojo creates for me.

Really interested in the book retriever app. Downloaded but I'm having a hard time scanning books. Any tips/tricks? I love this idea to better manage my classroom library so that books aren't constantly walking away.

I am very glad that you like the app. I had similar troubles today. After calling customer support I learned that you need to make sure that there isn't a glare on the ISBN barcode. Also, do not hold the scanner parallel to the ISBN barcode. Hold it closer to 90'. Additionally, if you are scanning a Scholastic book, check the inside covers for a different ISBN code. Apparently, Scholastic tends to create their own ISBN barcodes. Let me know if you are still having problems and I will get you the developers number.

Congratulations on the new iPad. That will be such a great tool to have in your classes. Here is a YouTube video that I came across with a description of how to use Teacher Pal on your iPad. http://youtu.be/YjRF-qzoXmA Hopefully, this will help to get you started.

Thanks for your swift reply about teacher pal. I have another question. I downloaded quick voice and on air. Are there instruction on how to use these apps?

YouTube has a treasure trove of application tutorials. That is my go-to website to learn more about how to use apps and websites that I am introduced to. You can either search "quickvoice tutorial" on YouTube, or, using Google's search bar, search "QuickVoice tutorial". This will then give you websites, articles, and videos fitting your search criteria. Think about it as differentiated searching.

Yes, I tried what you suggested to him. I emailed the app support, but overall, I noticed their ratings were not as great as I would like. Apparently, many people are experiencing similar problems. I am going to try again today with some other books, but it sort of defeats the purpose to have to type in every title and author manually. I am hoping that it is just a bad start and not a sign that every book will "not exist" in the app's database. Thank you for your speedy reply, nevertheless. If you hear of a "fix" let us all know. It is a great idea...if it works! :-)

Dave, I'm so happy that you're enjoying and talking about our Book Retriever app. The whole concept began with a bunch of our teacher friends grousing about keeping track of their books. Things got out of hand and we ended up developing an app. We thought it was a slick idea, but we had no idea that it would get all of the attention it has. We're overjoyed!! But thousands of users pointing out what you forgot can be a bit humbling. We realize we've got something that gets people excited and the last thing we want to do is leave them disappointed. The BR is developing. Constantly. We know our audience and we are incredibly receptive to all ideas, commentary, complaints, good, bad, whatever. If anyone has any concern, or question please don't hesitate to send an email or give us a call. You're going to talk to me or the owner of the company (Ben). We listen and we can help. Dave, I'm not sure about protocol for leaving contact information here. I don't want to make a sales pitch. I just wanted to let people know that we're out here paying attention. Thanks for checking us out.

quick addendum for Nina.
The current DB we've built consists of about 300,000 unique ISBNs. This consists of bibliographic data that we've assembled from various professional development documentation, publishers, and common core literature that we identified in researching the books that we wanted to target. On top of that was added the database from a partnership we've reached with Lexile. In the coming weeks, we expect to add another 500,000 ISBNs that we've gained access to through a partnership with Renaissance Learning. They're the folks that issue AR scores. Our goal is to create these relationships with the organizations responsible for these various leveling systems to make our database as robust as possible. Books that you might not have found before will be added. Information (leveling information) that you may not have found before will be added. And the books that you've already put into your library will be updated as that information becomes available. I hope I didn't overdo the information, here, but we're trying to catch up to any disappointments before they give up on us. We think it's a great idea, too. And we won't stop tinkering with it until it works the way you want it to. Cheers.

If you get the chance, I'd love for you to check out classroom Manager. It is an app I developed to collect behavior and intervention in real-time. It also assists the teacher in aggregating the data so it makes more sense. I'd love to hear people's feedback. Thanks!

Fashion <a href="http://www.cheaphairwig.co.uk">wigs</a> styles refer to styles and ideas which are much cool and amazing. Of course they reflect different particular

personality or taste. However, there are many hairstyles like Short Wigs styles, African American
<a href="http://www.cheaphairwig.co.uk/-17-b0-Long-hair.html">wigs</a>styles, styles, ponytail styles, curly and Wave styles, which look great. Many people also tend

to use wigs or hair extensions to create new looks. Short wigs which are easy to maintain are generally opted for. You can also go with hair hairpieces to create wraps

or buns styles.

Thanks for these suggestions. I teach High School English and we are incorporating 1to1 Ipads next year. Do you think these apps are applicable/helpful for high schoolers? Or is the class Dojo too childish? Thoughts?
